Day 50 - Eureka to Bandon

Arcata can only be safely viewed from the safety of a local merchant's shop.

Emma's day is off to a perfect start at the Humboldt Lagoons.

Did we mention there ain't nuthin' like a day at the beach?

California coastal grasses illuminate in the strong morning light.

Did we mention photography is stupid and boring?

California is nuthin' without Paul and Babe. Babe looks a bit pale today. Must be something she ate.

Wendy skilfully avoids the runaway ship and tourist trap.

And then the fog rolls in. US 101 in the pea-soup is a challenge.

On cue, the monsters roil out of the fog. They always eat the gift shops first. Crunchy. Salty.

Forget about the rules. There ain't nuthin' like a day at the beach.

Our friend and colleague Rachel (now at the Harvard Graduate School of Design) once asked me where my "one secret wild beach with the sweet wind and the careening surf and the caressing sun and the blond sand and the shining grass and the endless sky" is, from our collection "just another day on the beach". That's still a secret, but this is Emma's all-time favourite beach, at Face Rock. There is something about the sand.

Better. Much better.

The clouds put on a show for last light of the day, while the fog lurks just off shore.

It takes both of us to keep Emma satisfied on her favourite beach. It's like she's 2 years old all over again.

Just classic Bandon - this never gets old.

This is the one beach where Emma never gets tired.

There is a view, but who cares?

The fog begins to drift over the land.

Every year we come to this spot, I get to photograph the dozens of photographers fighting over the tripod holes marking the beauty shots. For some reason, this year, there are no photographers on the beach at all. Could be the beauty shots are finally worn out. Could be they got word I was coming to mock them yet again.
